Excellent Mystery Short Story (Free Ebook) – “The House In the Mist” by Anna K. Green

Shortly after that, the doors of the house are closed, so that all belated guests are left out in the frosty night, without the slightest chance for them to find entrance into the house. The guests within the house rejoice, those without clamour and shout outrageously.

The story of the “House In the Mist” by Anna K. Green is plotted around a family secret, which is fairly surprising in itself, but which is not the most noteworthy element of the book. In fact, this story is a miniature portrait of society, or of a part of it at any rate, where the ugliest passions given to man rule the lives of the people. Greed is hereabouts most prominent, and so are envy and avarice. Sympathy, mercy and charity are unquestionably absent. The host gives his guests a fare reward for their virtues in a truly thrilling and elaborate manner.

The story is well balanced: no passage too long, no tedious philosophical digressions nor lengthy moralizing sections. None of the characters is outstanding or extraordinary, but the twist in the end of the story makes the whole book very memorable and highly recommendable.

I started reading the ebook like a common mystery short story, expecting it to be amusing for a short time and to be soon forgotten again. The author is renowned for her finely written detective mystery novels and short stories, but this one is a story of real and long-standing value, more surprising in its quality and less in its attraction by suspense or mystery.
