Slip Case
What is the easiest way to knit a slip-on case for my boyfriend’s DS Lite?
First off I’m new to knitting. Taught myself all I know. Last week I tried using a circular needle but since the case needs to be pretty narrow it was hard to stretch the stitches out enough to knit in the round.
Right now I have pretty small needles and yard and would like to make it a tight and taught case. What stitch is best for protection and I would also like to make a flap for the top.
And lastly, what is the best way to cast off and sew up the one side and the bottom? I tried sewing up the side and bottom with regular sewing needles and it was such a pain! plus it unraveled, so this time I bought a crochet needle just in case I need to use it somehow.
I apologize if I confused anyone with my questions!!
This is quite easy to make and very useful. I’ve made a few for my cellphone and other things. Really fun.
I like knitting in the round, and can do it with double pointed needles, and with circulars. Of course, you would use the Magic Loop method for small sizes, and use a longer circular. You can also use two shorter circular needles too. There’s always a way!
I would knit it flat as a long piece of material as wide as you need, but more than twice the length. Then you fold it up from one end, just over two-thirds the way up, and then fold the top down as a flap. See? You will just have the two sides to sew up. I would use the same yarn, and make nice neat stitches along the sides. Look for “mattress stitch” to see how to do that.
I would use wool and not synthetics. I like to felt the item just a little, so it’s softer and a little tighter. You need to know how much it will felt, and shrink, so you can knit it larger and then make it the size you need. Those are really fun to do!
