Spanish War

What was the cause of the Spanish American war?
I would like to know what another voice in the crowd meant when he said we STOLE the spanish empire from them in 1898. What was the cause of the spanish american war.
The United States was fast becoming a world power both economically and militarily. Popular cultural commentators called for an American Empire. This confidence and desire(read arrogance) lead for a popular desire in the same.
“Yellow journalism” and faded memories of what war actually meant fanned the flames. Spain was an easy adversary (compared to England and France). Remnants of the Spanish empire were close at hand and strategically valuable to the US.
Worsening relationships between Spain and the US cumulated in war with the USS Maine exploding and sinking in Havana harbor. (The Maine had been present to protect American interests as Spain fought to suppress the Cuban rebellion to oust the Spanish Imperial rule) Shouts of Spanish sabotage and revenge lead to the US intervening in the Cuban revolution against Spain and invading the Philippines and the destruction of both the Spanish Atlantic and Pacific Fleets.
Apparently many in Spain (like Mexico) believe the war was contrived by Americans to grab land and resources.
It was later determined that the Maine blew herself up when coal dust in her fuel bunkers ignited.
