The cricket betting scandal – led to the barring for life of South Africas and Pakistans captains plus several other players – and later the death in a plane crash to Hanse Cronje – the south african captain. Story followed by about 2 billion people world wide.
Man U winning the triple crown in 1999. Man U are acknowledged as the worlds most popular sports team bar none and it was viewed by over a billion people.
1995 Rugby World Cup – first major sporting event hosted in South Africa after aparthied and presided over by Mandela. Host nation won – estimated viewing audience 1 billion
Drugs in sport – to the sacking of the Chinese female swim team, plus all subsidery affects through sport – ie Balco later emerging with the US track team, the taints to the Tour De France, the baseball steriod use inquires – all stem and started by drug use in the 1990′s.
Pablo Escobar – the Colombian defender in the 1994 soccer World Cup, shot when he went back home after they were defeated by country men who blamed him for the loss.
1998 Soccer World Cup. France winning there first title, the only new winner since 1966. Brazil lost in the finals after much conjector there star Ronaldo had a fit (possibly similar to epilepsy) just prior to the match.
1992 Olympics – The admittance of the American Dream team in the Basketball tournament of the Olympics. at the opening ceremony more athletes were interested in getting there picture taken with Jordan than parading for their country. Plus the readmittance of South Africa after apartheid.
1996 Olympics – Muhammad Ali lighting the Olympic torch (and recieving a replacement medal for the one he threw away) – also Carl Lewis winning his fourth gold medal in the long jump, Johnson winning the 200m 400m
