T Shirts – The Perfect Item Of Casual Clothing
Your father’s white t shirt might still exist, but that is not what is making fashion waves these days. Increasingly reflecting the music industry, the t shirts of 2010 are colorful, unusual, creative, and individualistic. Watch any men’s fashion show, and you will see an astonishing array of shirts inspired by new rave and indie rock, among other musical genres. The t shirt has definitely arrived in the fashion world from its humble origins.
Europeans were the first to use t shirts as we know them today. They were first seen there in the 1800s but did not become popular until around 1900. The shirts were originally made of a soft, Egyptian cotton. Their popularity did not spread across the ocean to America until after World War I. During that war, U.S. soldiers noticed that their European counterparts were not wearing the heavy, scratchy wool undershirts that they wore but were instead sporting the soft, white cotton shirts under their uniforms.
The trend caught on with the U.S. military, at least. By World War II, the Army and Navy branches of the service were issuing white cotton t shirts as part of the standard uniform, although the shirts were still to be worn underneath the uniform. As soldiers were sent to warmer parts of the world, however, they would shed the outer uniform and wear only the t shirt. Pictures of these soldiers working and relaxing in their t shirts encouraged stateside men to try wearing them in the same manner.
T shirts increased in popularity after the end of World War Two, when Hollywood stars like Marlon Brando, John Wayne, and James Dean frequently wore them on both in movies and in regular life. As time passed, t shirts continue to be revolutionized. As a sign of the times, the 1960′s brought about tie-dyed t shirts and screen printed designs, in addition to the hugely popular Ringer t shirts. Black concert t shirts emerged in the 1970′s, as a way for rock fans everywhere to showcase their love for their favorite band by wearing the name or logo set against a dark background.
The next two decades witnessed the rise of slogan tees. In the 1980s, the ever-popular tees that were becoming a staple of the American wardrobe carried slogans such as “I’m with stupid” or “Frankie says Relax” – a nod to the ’80s band Frankie Goes to Hollywood. But by the new millennium, with the once-ubiquitous slogan tees starting to fade as a common fashion item, the “personal branding” t shirts emerged as the new phenomenon and continue to be a staple of t shirt fashion design.
Currently, the world of t shirt design is more thriving than ever. With both the traditional fashion designers producing eye-catching and memorable t shirt designs and the t shirt websites that help people make their own tees, brightly colored and boldly patterned t shirt fashions are everywhere in 2010. T shirt lovers the world over can expect new and innovative designs in the coming decade, and for many years to come.
