Spending A Bit Of Time Looking At Luxury Train Travel
Luxury train travel is something that many people don’t think of too often. But with this chance you can enjoy a lovely bunch of scenery in Africa and ride aboard classic locomotives. The Rovos Rail line is one that needs to be looked into for those lovers of trains and just plain old lovers of romance too.
Many years have been spent in buying and bringing back to life many classic travel locomotives for this line. Giving you the chance to ride in elegant fashion and enjoy modern facilities alike. Of all the engines they have their oldest is the Tiffany built during 1893.
There are also three of the class 19D locomotives that are in their travel fleet. Just a bit of trivia here only 235 total of these engines would ever be built. They have been modified on the engine to increase the length of travel.
Still another five members of the fleet are the 25NC class. If you’ve never heard of them before, well they are considered the giants of the steam engine during the years. Though since the engines were a bit too upkeep they have been modified into a less expensive option. But the outside of the train still holds the same stylish look as it did when they were originally built.
The first of this type of engine is the 3484 Marjorie that was originally built during 1953 by a company out of Scotland. This beauty would require a lot of repair to be made back into a true oil-burning locomotive. It seems that a lot of parts were damaged or even missing so it also took quite a bit of time for the repairs to be completed. With the conversion to the new engine the range of travel would be increased from only one kilometer all the way to 400 kilometers. She would be placed back into running condition and have her first run in May of 1999.
You also have the 3442 Anthea for this class of engine. She was originally built in 1953 in Germany. After a bit of easier work than the previous engine she would be brought back into shape and placed into service. Her first trip would be in May of 2007 when she would take a steam safari that would go to Victoria Falls.
Next on the block would be the 3533 King Zog, built during 1954 again coming out of Scotland. The name funny enough is still part of the Vos family and it is the dog of Rohan whose name was used for this beauty. Finding its way through restoration and ready for its first trip in 2008.
Still buying two more of these to add into the fleet with the purchase of the 3440 and 3480. Both of them are still being worked on to be restored. At first it was thought 3440 was going to be damaged too much to be repaired. However, it was found to not be as bad as thought and in the process of being worked on.
Finally the last of the 25NC class would be the 3480, though it’s not quite ready for service. It will soon be another choice that a traveler will have to take the trip of a lifetime. Try something new and exciting with a trip on a luxury train. Or a great idea for a nice romantic getaway.
