Stone Rock

Stone Rock
what is the best type of stone or rock to use for carving with fine detail?

I have tried using flat stones of various shapes and colors (not sure what kind) that you find on the beach, and they are pretty good for detail but weak and prone to cracking. If anyone is experienced in stone carving, i would appreciate if you could tell me about what kind of rocks to use, and where the best place to look for this kind of rock is.
P.S., is crystal a good choice for carving? Kind of tough; what kind of knife/tool is strong enough for it?

soapstone, available at any art supply store.
