should students learn the classics in English class, or?
choose books that are meaningful to them to analyze and write about? or a combination? does it matter what type of kid is in question (or what type of teacher)?
article today in the NYT: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/30/books/30reading.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&hp
Most kids find reading difficult and boring, so they should be encouraged to read books that interest them, especially primary school kids and those in years 7 and 8.
Some of the classics (Frankenstein, Treasure Island, The Crucible) are relatively easy to read, while also remaining classics and give the kids something interesting to study. However, classics by Jane Austen and the like are often dull, boring and difficult to read. These books are best left for older students (17-19 years old).
Basically, encourage the kids to read interesting, meaningful classics, and avoid the difficult, boring books until later years.
Perhaps come up with a list of books and let the kids vote for a favourite and study that?
