Do U really need a degree in illus./cartooning to go in2 comics & get your stuff self-published & distributed?
Hi, please excuse the spelling. I have a degree in animation/film and and I want to either go back to school to get another degree in illustration/cartooning or get some training with Art Instructional Schools with their 2-year program. I’ve been out of school over a decade.Do I really need a degree in illustration/cartooing? Did Simon and Schuster, Kane, Kirby, Lee, and all these other comic book bigshots have degrees in illustration/cartooning before they went into the comics bisuness an got their material published and distributed? I want to get my own comics self-published and distributed. Please help me out.Thank you.
It is common knowledge that no popular cartoonist today has a degree in any thing. For best advice about how to proceed, ask a practicing comics writer. I suggest Brooke McEldowney, who draws “9 Chickweed Lane” and “Pibgorn.” The cartoonists who drew “B.C.,” “The Wizard of Id,” “Little Orphan Annie,” and “Dick Tracy” are all dead.
