What books should I read in preparation for studying English Literature?
I’m in 6th form and I want to study English Literature at Uni and was wondering which books I should read over the next year or so…?
I’m drawing up a list at the moment so any suggestions would be great
Here are some common books (or authors) people read in college English Lit classes–or have read before entering college:
Note: I’ve put a * by books most everyone will have read
*–Anything by Shakespeare (obviously.) Some popular ones include King Lear, Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet, Julius Caesar, and Othello
–Something by Jane Austen: Pride & Prejudice; Sense & Sensibility; Emma
–A Russian novel: Crime and Punishment (Dostoevsky); Anna Karenina (Tolstoy)
–The Scarlet Letter by Hawthorne
–Existential literature: Metamorphosis (Kafka); The Trail (Kafka)
–Paradise Lost (definitely) by Milton
*–The Iliad or the Odyssey by Homer
–Virginia Woolf: Mrs. Dalloway or To the Lighthouse
–George Orwell: 1984 or Animal Farm
*–Brave New World by Huxley
*–The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald
*–Something by Steinbeck: The Grapes of Wrath or Of Mice and Men
*–Catcher in the Rye by Salinger
*–Lord of the Flies by Golding
*–Heart of Darkness by Conrad
–Black Boy or Native Son by Wright
*–Something by Dickens: Great Expectations , David Copperfield, or Tale of Two Cities
–Oedipus or Antigone by Sophocles
*–The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer
You don’t need to really read these, but be familiar with the overall theme(s):
–The Prince by Machiavelli
–Walden by Thoreau
–Candide by Voltaire
