Robin Roberts Dies At 83 Years Of Age

Robin Roberts could get ahead of the hitter before they had a chance to get settled at the plate. The natural by-product of his advantage is that Roberts almost never gave hitters a free pass.He attacked the strike zone with a fastball Tom Seaver once said appeared to move toward the hitter as if it were “sliding on a sheet of ice,” as well as a tumbling slider that many hitters considered the best of his generation. From 1948 to 1966, Robin Roberts went 286-245 for largely inferior teams (aside from the pennant-winning 1950 “Whiz Kids” Philadelphia Phillies), but his superior ability and class always gave fans a reason to cheer.Today, those cheers have turned into pleas for the days of yore – the great Robin Roberts can no longer take the hill.

Robin Roberts’ death was unexpected

USA Today reports that the Philadelphia Phillies have released a statement to the media, announcing that Robin Roberts died of natural causes at his home in Temple Terrace, FL.There had been no word that Roberts had been ill, although at 83 years of age anything is possible.Roberts leaves behind four boys, one brother, seven grandkids and a great-grandson.Phillies fans were sad after losing broadcaster Harry Kalas in 2009, and the death of Robin Roberts extends that sadness.

Robin Roberts led the Phillies from 1948 to 1961

Through 19 seasons in the sun (14 in Philadelphia), Robin Roberts took control of his games.Roberts’ control was a double-edged sword in that it kept hitters from being able to wait out a walk, but it also made him prone to serving up home runs.He surrendered 505 home runs in his career, more than any other Major League pitcher. But Roberts was still one of the best right-handers in the National League during his tenure with Philadelphia.Along with Grover Cleveland Alexander before him and Steve Carlton to follow, Robin Roberts stands above all other pitchers in Philadelphia Phillies history.Always a workhorse, Roberts’ most outstanding season was 1952, when he led the NL with 28 victories, nearly becoming the first pitcher since Dizzy Dean to win 30.

Roberts loved his Phillies until the end

According to son Jim Roberts, Robin Roberts never missed a game on TV.The old Whiz Kid took special enjoyment from the Phillies’ recent success (two World Series appearances over the past two seasons).Giddy exclamations like “Did you see Jimmy (Rollins) make that play?” or “I wish I had Brad (Lidge’s) slider!” characterized just how much of the wide-eyed child Robin Roberts never lost. But the thing is, that wide-eyed young man in the twilight of his years sported quite a slide-piece himself.
