Twenty Five

TWENTY FIVE percent of Americans did not read a single book last year?
And by last year, I obviously mean 2006.
What are your opinions on the subject?
Wow! 2006 was FOUR years ago? I sure did not know that! When did this happen exactly?
No, but really, that is not the crux of my question. I obviously realize that it is not 2007. The poll was simply taken in 2006, and I realized that after I wrote “last year.”
Still, people, focus and look at the main point.
As distressing as it is, I’d believe it. Books simply take more time than other forms of entertainment. They take more energy. You don’t have to be mentally present to get a kick out of a sitcom; it’s easy to make dinner while listening to a podcast at the same time. Books ask more, as a broad overgeneralization, and the reward they provide often isn’t as immediately accessible. Some people have also been “scarred” by school—consciously or unconsciously, they associate reading with assignments, with essays where they are forced to examine parts of books they find less compelling. They think modern writers require the “translation” and “effort” of Shakespeare, and they’re looking for a leisure activity, not a chore.
Is literature a dying art? As an aspiring writer, I hope not. Is its presence and role in society changing, for better or worse? Certainly. And in the end, I think its future is dependent on its ability to adapt to the needs of a new culture without sacrificing its basic principles. Which kind of makes literature sound like a crotchety old politician or something … but it’s not, I swear!

Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever [VHS] $19.98 From Wikipedia: Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever was a 1983 television special produced by Suzanne de Passe for Motown Records, to commemorate Motown’s twenty-fifth year of existence. (Motown was founded in January 1959, meaning that a twenty-fifth anniversary special should have aired in 1984, not 1983. One could argue that Gordy’s vision of what would become “Hitsville U.S.A.” was conceived … |

Gilmore Girls: The Complete Sixth Season $15.71 The rapid-paced banter between the mother-daughter team of Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel) is the calling card for Gilmore Girls.
