Bordeaux Travel Guide

Bordeaux

Bordeaux is renowned for its “red, red wine”. Located in the west side of France, it is the capital of Aquintaine. Currently, the city is drawing in tourists not just because of its spirits but because of the several mansions built in the 18th century and beautiful gothic cathedrals. It is equivocally tolerant with an individual’s point-of-view. In Bordeaux, no one will question your religion, political beliefs and orientation. The city is also known as “Little Paris”. With a Eurail pass, you can see the sights and taste the famous wines of Bordeaux.

History Of Bordeaux

In 300 BC the Bituriges Vivici, a Celtic tribe, settled in the town and christened it “Burdigala.” Around 60 BC under Roman rule, it became the centre of Roman Aquintaine, which flourished on the Severan Dynasty. Bordeaux’s golden age was during the 18th century that even Victor Hugo was mesmerized, saying that the town is the combination of Antwerp and Versailles. Around 5,000 of the town buildings are from this era. Briefly, after the Second World War, the government of France transferred to Bordeaux from Paris.

Things To Do In Bordeaux

A visit to Bordeaux is never complete without sampling its wine, so a visit to La Maison du Vin de Bordeaux is a must. Bordeaux is home to several museums such as the Bordeaux Wine Museums; Museum of Fine Arts which displays the famous “Le Grece Sur Les Ruines De Mossolonghi” by Delacroix; the Natural History Museum where you can see fossils and animals; and the Center Jean Moulin, which is dedicated to World War II’s Resistance and Free France programs. Visit Saint Andre Cathedral, an enthralling yet eclectic structure where its interior are covered with illuminations and paintings by various European artists. Also, visit the Saint Michel Cathedral and the Saint-Eurin Basilica, these three are listed under UNESCO World Heritage sites because they have a role in the French pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. See the Espalanade des Quinconces, which is engulfed by a 30-acre walkway overlooking the river. It has two stunning fountains of Poseidon and his mythical carriage. The Grand Theater of Bordeaux hosts several ballets, operas and musical performances. However, you can also content yourself with appreciating its architecture – its Twelve Corinthian pillars are adorned with roman goddesses, and the muses. You may also cruise around Bordeaux’s Garonne River.

Getting To Bordeaux

To get to Bordeaux you can travel by plane from Paris, London, Amsterdam and Madrid. If you have a Eurail Pass, it is valid in the TGV train. You can also reach Bordeaux by car via the N10 or A10 highway from the north or the A63 highway from the south. There are buses that are available to take you Bordeaux. The best way to explore the city is by foot, but you can also opt to use the bike lanes. There are trams and buses around Bordeaux as well as a ferry called the Le Bus de Fleuve.
