What do I do with a bunch of vintage items left to me?
My great aunt left me some money and a storage facility. In that storage facility are boxes upon boxes of old vintage items. I don’t know why it was all just left in there, but its all preserved pretty well.
Do I sell it? Would that be disrespectful? I would say 80% of the stuff is in mint condition, like an old Revere movie camera. a Smith Premier typewriter from like 1880 in pretty good condition, two old Hohner harmonicas, and some other musical things/old technological things. There are also some old encyclopedias in pretty good condition, old national geographic magazines, signed posters, clothes (like fur coats and stuff), toys, etc.
Have no clue what to do with it.
Sorry if this is the wrong category, didn’t know where to place it.
Sounds like you really don’t want this stuff…
You can keep it and feel the burden of it’s weight on you, or you can find homes for the items with people who would be delighted to have them (and understand their value.) Your aunt left you a gift: you get to decide whether it will be a curse or a blessing to you.
I recommend having the items appraised by at least 2 appraisers. Maybe even check ebay and see what items are popular and are favoring bids.
You might consider donating the items to a museum or a good cause (silent auction or thrift outlet). Get a receipt for a tax write-off.
See if any other family members would cherish any of these items (beyond the $$ value they are likely worth) and give them as an xmas or bday gift.
Or sell them and use the funds to do something that would bring you joy and honor the spirit in which they were left you.
