Putting the cart–er, saddle–before the horse?
Advice time. I found the PERFECT saddle. Its everything I want. Its on ebay for another day. The only problem? I don’t have a horse yet. Would it be a huge mistake to buy the saddle now, and hope that it fits the horse? (If not I would either keep it for decoration or resell it). Its a vintage circle Y and I have NEVER seen a saddle so stunningly perfect in all my life. And its CHEAP! (Ok, well cheap for a circle y). Should I get it and pray it fits my future horse, or let it slip through my fingers?
As previously stated, its a circle y. Those are western saddles. Western saddles don’t have flocking. No adjustments there.
If you already know what horse you are getting couldn’t you just ask the owner for the saddle measurement’s the old saddle is? But if you have not started looking at horses yet you could always buy it as a decoration. I think you should definitely buy it. If its broken you could always get a saddler to mend it. If it does fit your future horse then I would take it to a saddler first to see if its ok. My instructor bought a second hand saddle once that seemed perfect. She spent two hours looking at it before buying. Though, even though my instructor can tell if a tree is broken, it was unnoticeable. She had to pay three times the price she paid for the saddle to have it mended. That just shows that it does not matter how much experience you have, you can always end up buying a broken saddle. I say buy it and if it is broken, or does not fit, you can always use it as a decoration. That way its not a big loss if it does not fit. Its a win-win situation, either way the saddle has a use. I say go for it. Just think how much you would kick yourself if you let the saddle go and it ended up being the right size for your future horse.
