What are some vintage western and adventure novels?
I’m trying to “build” a character’s bookshelf for character development (because I’m nerdy that way and like to know things like this, even if they don’t wind up in the story). He’s 17, loves Western and Adventure novels, and the story takes place in 1962. They don’t need to be “classics” (i.e. in the realm of Dracula or Frankenstein) per se.
For westerns; definitely “Shane” by Jack Schaefer. Will James was an author and a real cowboy, and his book “Smokey” (if you need to reference it, it’s available free on-line). Although I’m not a fan, Louis L’Amour was popular then. Clarence Mulford created Hopalong Cassidy, and there was an entire series about the Bar-20 cowboys.
If he’s a nerd, he may be holding on to books that belonged to his father or grandfather. Anything of Jack London’s, Jules Verne’s or Edgar Rice Burroughs who wrote not only the original Tarzan books, but Sci-Fi, too.
He’s a bit old for the Hardy Boys books, but I think they were being republished about that time; and Disney had a TV series.
As a genuine “nerd”, how much you want to bet he’d be a bit of a pain in the posterior while watching westerns; pointing out errors like cowboys using rifles that weren’t invented yet, or other inconsistencies that would annoy him?
And good for you for developing your character and giving him something besides how he looks!!
