War Novel

War Novel
Who do you think is the best war novel writer ?

I personally like W.E.B. Griffin. I am actually an aspiring author as are so many countless others. I try and base my writing off of several authors styles, one of those styles is W.E.B. Griffin’s style for spinning a great war yarn. I can’t really find other war writers that are really any good. So if you could help me out that would be great.

Who are your personal favorite war novelists?
I have actually read All’s quiet on the western front, and loved it I meant some newer writers. Thanks

Tim O’Brien is among the best war novelists ever. His work is poignant, honest, and powerful to read. He doesn’t write war stories focused on action or romanticizing the topic, his work focuses on what it’s like to be a soldier during, and occasionally after war. And he’s got it more accurate than almost anyone else I’ve read.

Another, newer guy who seems to have a decent understanding of actually being a soldier is Matthew Eck. His book The Farther Shore is pretty amazing. It’s focused on modern warfare, though dated to a significant degree because of how rapidly OIF and OEF forced the military to change. It’s really well written, and a super quick read.

Both these guys are combat veterans. When I read war fiction, and it may be ‘snobby’ of me I guess, but when I read war fiction I want to know that the writer knows the subject with the same intimacy I do. I don’t like glorification/romanticization of the topic. I want honest, first person knowledge of it. (Sometimes action and such is hyped in war novels to serve a purpose, I don’t mind that – but doing it simply to fit a genre or sell a book is disgusting.)
