HYGH- I agree that Mickey Ward deserves mention. As do champs Wayne McCullough, George Gardner, Mike McTigue and challengers Jimmy Slattery, Irish Bob Murphy and Frank Moran(who gave Jack Johnson all the hell he wanted). But John Duddy is just a puppy and has a LONG way to go before he merits mention alongside the names on this list!
ELMER- Tunney’s quality of opposition was nowhere near what McLarnin’s was. Not even close, actually. His greatest victories were against shopworn versions of Dempsey, Gibbons and Greb. Jimmy beat something like 14 world champions back at a time when there was only 1 champ per division and only 8 weight divisions. He beat everybody from flyweight up to Welter: Fidel La Barba, Pancho Villa, Jackie Fields, Sammy Mandell, Tony Canzoneri, Billy Petrolle, Lou Ambers, Barney Ross. It’s like a who’s-who of the hall of fame.
BLUE- Tommy Ryan was actually of English extraction, not Irish(his real name was Joseph Youngs).
Before anyone says anything, Kid McCoy and Jack Delaney were not Irish either. Their names were Norman Selby(English) and Ovila Chapdelaine(French)
