Things to do in Frankfurt
Frankfurt is one of Germany’s most cultural cities, not only as the birthplace of some of its most famous writers – including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe – but also for its wealth of attractions aimed at visitors of diverse interests. While Frankfurt may be most associated today with finance, this city offers much to appeal to more than just business travellers.
To orient yourself in Frankfurt when you first arrive, you may wish to scale the heights of the Main Tower for a panoramic view of the city. The Main Tower is the only skyscraper in Frankfurt that’s open to the public, and looking out over the ultra-modern city centre can be a fascinating experience, especially if you’re more accustomed to the historical buildings of other German cities that didn’t require such extensive rebuilding following the Second World War.
That doesn’t mean Frankfurt has lost touch with the past though, and some areas of the city still feature historical buildings, particularly in the Sachsenhausen district where you’ll find quaint half-timber houses and the city’s famous cider houses. Landmarks such as the City Hall and St Bartholomew Cathedral can also be found when heading to Römerberg.
If you’re drawn to Frankfurt for its cultural credentials, one essential port of call may be Goethe’s house, which has been lovingly restored to include his authentic furniture and art collections. Frankfurt itself is teeming with art too, particularly from contemporary artists, and you can enjoy works by such luminaries as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Gerhardt Richter at the triangular Museum of Modern Art.
Frankfurt’s other museums are well respected too, including the vast Senckenberg Museum of Natural History, which is the largest such museum in the country. This museum traces back millions of years of history, from reconstructed dinosaur skeletons to authentic Ancient Egyptian mummies, and can make for a fascinating day out.
If you get tired of the concrete and skyscrapers, Frankfurt also has many green areas that can offer the perfect escape from the bustle, like the Palmengarten Botanical Garden. This expansive garden centre hosts more than 6,000 species across 50 acres, from rainforest specimens to flowers of the African savannah.
You’ll never be stuck for places to stay in Frankfurt, even during festivals, conferences and other events that bring a multitude of visitors to the city. Frankfurt Airport is just a short distance from the city centre, making airport hotels a convenient option for getting in and out of Frankfurt.

Out Of Africa: Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack $4.88 The great irony of John Barry’s Academy Award-winning score for Out of Africa (which also took the Oscar as Best Picture) is that it almost never was; director Sydney Pollack had originally envisioned the film with native African music, going as far as laying the indigenous score down as he was editing. But the weight of John Barry’s arguments–not to mention his considerable track record and comp… |
