World History Of Mother’s Day

The Birth of Mother’s Day

Anna Jarvis is accredited with inventing the modern Mothers Day back in 1912. Anna wanted a specific date to celebrate moms within the family. She wanted the entire social structure, from the nuclear family to society as a whole, to celebrate moms. It was an instant success and spread like wildfire across the country. Companies jumped on board quickly for mother’s day gifts. Anna also trademarked the terms “Mother’s Day” and “Second Sunday of May” back then, which was incredible foresight. “Mother’s Day” is the official term signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson.

Due to mass commercialization Anna Jarvis ironically opposed Mothers Day 9 years after its inception. This in no way slowed the popularity of Mothers Day and the history of Mother’s Day has become legendary. Far from it, this original United States holiday soon became official in many countries around the world and now the second Sunday of May.

Mothers Day in Ancient Times

Although the modern Mother’s Day started in a quiet small state in the United States, the tradition of a day for mothers dates back to ancient Greece and China as early as 700 BC. Like many Mediterranean countries, Greece celebrates mothers day at the Spring Equinox. There was a special day to celebrate mothers and mother Earth together in Ancient China.

The Roman imperial empire adopted the Greco use of the Spring Equinox as Mothers Day, also known today as the Ides of March. A big difference was that the Roman version of the holiday was observed for a whole week starting on March 15th. The ancient Romans also had a holiday called Matronalia which was customary to give a gift to your mother.

China’s Mothers Day was the most widely adopted in Asia due to its cultural influence. In France, England and the rest of Western Europe, a specific Sunday was denoted as “Mothering Sunday”.

Mother’s Day Today

Mothers Day is today celebrated on different dates and in many different ways around the world. Mothers Day gift ideas grew exponentially to include flowers, chocolates, jewelry, designer bags and chocolates all complemented with a card. Personalized jewelry has been quickly ascended in popularity. For more in depth information we recommend Mothers Day Gift Central as the most comprehensive resource for Mother’s Day as well as Mother’s Day gift ideas. The 2nd Sunday of May has been adopted by over 500 million people around the world. The second most used date remains the Spring Equinox which is also known as the Vernal Equinox or the Ides of March.
