These Natural Cures For Depression Work Every Time
In this article, when I talk about natural cures for depression, I’m referring to lifelong changes in the way you think and act–not herbal supplements or other so called “natural depression cures.”
This doesn’t mean that doctor prescribed meds for depression (“Prozac,” for example) should not be taken for short-term help.
Prescription Drugs Aren’t The Cure–Only A Treatment
No, usually this will fix only part of your problem. It comes down to the level of commitment you give your new way of life that will be the real cure. Getting depressed is a wake-up call; it’s a signal that your life has become out of balance. So “curing” yourself of depression means doing whatever is necessary to get your life back in balance.
These things include daily (or almost daily) aerobic exercise, eating healthy foods, not smoking, no heavy drinking, and NO illegal drugs whatsover. Most of the time doing (or not doing) just these things alone will “cure” depression in most cases. Only after these adjustments would be things like counseling or other cognitive therapies.
But when some people think of natural cures for depression, they think of herbal ‘meds’ that you can swallow like a pill. The expectation is it’s a “natural” alternative to “Prozac” (for example). But this isn’t surprising. After all, we live in an age of ‘instant gratification.’ We have been accustomed to getting an instant and easy solution for almost everything:
Instant Gratification
Need cash at 2 am? ATMs. No time to cook? Frozen pizza from your freezer to microwave ready in 10 minutes. Need your oil changed? Pull into ‘Fast Lube.’ Need information on global warming for a school report? A few keystrokes on the internet. (Need this paper written for you? Have your debit or credit card ready.)
…The same mindset applies to our medical needs: Are you tired? Drink a Rock Star or similar energy drink for a fast burst of energy…even the remotest gas station carries them. Stressed out? Take one of your prescription tranquilizers…You can get a steady supply if you really want to. Want to avoid pregnancy? You’re right–the answer comes in a pill. Do you have RLS–”Restless Leg Syndrome?” You sure do, and the pharmaceutical goliaths can PROVE you do…and they happen to have the remedy…in a pill, of course.
So it’s no wonder we expect that depression can be eliminated with a cure-in-a-bottle…a pill bottle. It’s not our fault, we’ve just been conditioned to expect it to be this way.
Unfortunately, Exercise And Eating Right Can’t Be Taken In A Pill
But while it may be necessary to take a pill in order to get your brain’s chemicals ‘evened out,’ it’s only part of the solution–and by far the easiest part. The hard part–which has been proven more effective (overall) than drugs in curing depression–is daily aerobic exercise and eating right, amongst other “free” things. (I know you may be thinking that buying & preparing healthy food can be expensive–which can be true.) But this is also the part that gets little or no press…the “grunt work.” This is the part of curing depression that very few people want to talk about or admit.
Because there’s no money in the cure for depression–only the treatment–for pharmaceutical companies, they have very little support and promotion of things like eating right and exercise.
The Cure Is Up To You
Nope, it’s up to the depressed person to motivate him or herself to do these things daily and to NOT abuse drugs or alcohol. And it can’t be a temporary thing like a diet; it must be a habit like bathing.
Accomplishing some of these natural cures for depression is easier said than done. Because if it were easy, not many folks would be depressed and need prescription medication in the first place. Somehow, however, you are going to have to take action on an improvement plan for yourself.
Stick To Your Plan and Don’t Give Up!
The bottom line is that you must want to get better MORE than you want to remain the same! Just remember that you can do whatever you sincerely put your mind to. Natural cures for depression may be free, but they require your dedication and they’re the only way to long-term happiness. You can do it!
