Should I apply to Cornell?
The only reasons I would choose not to are the 500-word essay for the supplement, and of course, the cost of applying.
I’m applying to:
UC Berkeley
UC Santa Barbara
UC Los Angeles
UC San Diego (John Muir College)
Pitzer College
Reed College
Stanford University
Yale
Harvard
Green Mountain College
So- should I apply to Cornell? I’m applying “Undecided” or “Undeclared” to every one, so the major I want isn’t really a consideration.
I have an ACT score of 31, I’ve taken all the AP classes at my school, I have a very high GPA, and I’m a National Merit Commended Scholar (as well as an AP Scholar.) Plus, I’m a Girl Scout and an editor of my school yearbook.
Please help me decide? Thanks.
You have a better chance at Cornell than Yale or Harvard. Unfortunately you probably don’t have much of a chance at the Ivies, going from what you’ve written here. Maybe you’re not mentioning some things.
About 85% of the kids who apply to the Ivies are qualified, but only 7 – 10% are admitted. For each part of the SAT, the Ivies receive over 3000 perfect 800 scores. Not sure how many 2400 scores, but I know several kids who scored that high just from my area. The kids who are admitted to the Ivies, really stand out, have a Passion they’ve been working for years. (My dh participates in the admissions process for his Ivy alma mater.)
Kids who were admitted to the Ivies last year:
Female athlete, one of the top in state (early likely letter)
Student with extensive work / awards in medical research
Students who do autopsies
Student engineer published with patent
Student astrophysicist with awards
Student co-wrote published research article with professor from top university
Students who started charities and do lots of hands on work on them
Students with physical difficulties, yet top athletes and musicians
Student with exceptional acting and singing talent / awards
Most of these kids have personalities that stand out, too.
Students with perfect scores and grades (some recent immigrants). And some of them are actually quite interesting kids, a few you would likely have seen on the news about their extracurricular activities (too unique to mention).
There is always the chance, but what does your school counselor say?
Have you been to Ithaca? Freezing! Lots of drinking when my friends attended, not much else to do.
Good luck!
